Collaborative Mural with Thomastown Mens Shed

This project is a collaboration between the members of Thomastown Mens Shed and socially engaged artist Amelia Caulfield, and centres around painting a mural on the exterior wall of the Mens Shed’s rented space on Marshes Street in Thomastown, Kilkenny.

The purpose of this project is to collaboratively create an aesthetically pleasing mural in this area which has been left dilapidated and disregarded, with an aim to brighten it up and assist in the regeneration of this space. In addition to this, this project aims to foster creative community engagement by involving integral community members in the creation of a public art piece. Also central to the project is encouraging and promoting discussions about individual and community values, reciprocity, and what it means to be a part of a community.

The processes involved in this project were value based workshops, design discussions, and collaborative teamwork. The themes that inspire this project are civic engagement with our environment, community development and engagement, exploration of values, and co-creation of our shared spaces.
